This fun craft project is perfect for Sunday school or for celebrating Passover. Teach children the story of Moses and have fun while creating this cute figure from recycled materials.Be sure to check out all our Passover crafts as well as our main Passover index for even more fun activities including coloring pages and holiday recipes.

What you’ll need:

  • Cardboard tube
  • Brown and peach felt
  • 2- 3” x 2” scraps of cardboard
  • Acrylic paint in peach and pink
  • White doll hair or yarn
  • Brown chenille stem
  • 4-5 cotton balls
  • Black marker
  • Scissors
  • White craft glue
  • Paintbrush

How to make it:

  1. Paint the top portion of the cardboard tube peach. No need to paint the back or anywhere else as the rest will be covered with felt. Use a cotton swab or your fingertip to pick up some pink paint. Blot most of it off with paper towel so that it’s almost dry. Dot on the cheeks.
  2. Glue doll hair or white yarn around the peach area (face). Glue on for hair and beard.
  3. From a sheet of brown felt, cut a large half circle.
  4. Insert cotton balls inside the cardboard tube. There should be enough that they will provide roundness for the top of the head, but not too many that the tube cannot stand on its own. Glue inside to secure.
  5. Wrap the brown felt around the tube, starting at the top and back of the head and wrapping around both sides, meeting in the front. Trim if needed to fit and glue in place.
  6. Trim cardboard rectangles to give them rounded top edges. Glue one behind the other, allowing it to be shown from the back. Use black marker to write some of the commandments on the front tablet (i.e. thou shalt not steal, honor thy mother and father, etc)
  7. Glue tablets to the left side of the robe.
  8. Bend the top of brown chenille stem into a cane shape. Glue to the other side of the robe.
  9. Cut out two small circles from peach felt. Glue one on to the chenille cane (hands) and the other to the left side of the tablets.
  10. Use black marker to add dots for eyes and draw on eyebrows.

According to Jewish tradition, the prophet Elijah, a biblical hero who lived in the 9th century B.C., visits every Passover Seder around the world to sip from a special goblet of red wine left out just for him. The hope is that Elijah’s presence will inspire those at the table to build a better world filled with justice, freedom and peace.

What you’ll need:

  • One large plastic wine glass
  • Tissue paper, torn into small pieces
  • Ribbon
  • Decorative touches (small butterflies, flowers, jewels, etc.)
  • Scissors
  • Paint brush
  • Craft glue

How to make it:

  1. Paint your wine glass with a thin layer of craft glue and cover it with small pieces of tissue paper (hint: only paint one section of the glass at a time so that the glue doesn’t dry before you have a chance to apply all of the tissue).
  2. Once the entire glass is covered in tissue, paint a thin layer of glue over everything to seal it, like shellac.
  3. Wait at least 1 hour for the glue to set and dry.
  4. Cut a piece of ribbon and dot one side of it with glue. Wind the ribbon (glue side down) around the stem of the wine glass until it is completely covered.
  5. Decorate the rest of the glass with bits of ribbon (here we’ve cut out small circles of ribbon and glued them sporadically around the glass) and any other decorative touches you like. We’ve used tiny painted butterflies that come with an adhesive backing. All you have to do is peel off the protective paper and stick them on.

Tips:

  • Use different coloured tissue paper so that your goblet looks like it’s made out of stained glass. (Tip: Put it on the Seder table under a bright light and watch the coloures dance!)
  • Visit the scrapbooking section of your local dollar store for amazing decorations. You’ll find gorgeous ribbon, tissue, stickers, flowers, butterflies, shells and more.
